How to use a diffuser to get the best waves in life

Hair diffusers - you know, that thing that looks like a bowl at the bottom of a hair dryer box - are making a comeback. You may remember it as a tool from the '80s. It's an important part of getting that super funny curly halo. Now it's more about enhancing your natural textures. A diffuser is useful if you want to have wavy, curved hair, which means you should probably re-dig it out of the deepest part of the bathroom cabinet.

You can use a hair diffuser to get the effortless waves you see in every magazine and fashion advertisement today.

Diffusers are a favorite of celebrity stylist Jen Atkin, who is known for creating beach goddess hair. You may have seen her work on Kardashian and Haddiz. "Instead of just blow-drying your hair and using your curling iron to get waves, you first enhance your own natural curvature and add to the waves that you naturally have. It's much faster.

She says the trick works on all kinds of hair, with at least some natural texture. If your waves are wetter than the S-shaped noodles, you can create them with the help of this hair dryer attachment. Diffusers also help dry hair quickly to eliminate shrinkage. Atkin gave us her best diffusion tips, and then we put her advice to the test step by step.

1

Try not to touch your curls.

Before you pick up the diffuser, there are a few keys to maintaining your curling pattern. Don't do too much grooming. If you have bad knots, use a wide-toothed comb to untangle them. Also, avoid rubbing your hair with a towel, which can cause static and frizz; Instead, pull wet hair into a microfiber bandana and leave it alone. Do your makeup first so your hair doesn't get wet.

2

Tame curls with mousse, or add volume with a wavy spray.

Use wave products such as mousse (preferably curly and wavy) or wave spray (straighter hair types). If you have very thick hair, divide it into two sections and cut the hair from your ears to your hairline, then start at the back.

3

Tuck your hair into the diffuser to lock in your natural waves.

Place the diffuser at the end of the dryer, tilted upward. Take 2 inches of hair and put it in a bowl. Twisting the hair first will give waves more definition, especially if you have certain sections that are always flat. Set the drying gear to low or medium. Too much heat can be a wave killer. "You just want it to be about 75 percent dry," Atkin says. "If you let it dry naturally after that, it looks more bouncy, especially if you get natural waves or curls."

4

Use a diffuser to add volume to the top of the hair.

If you want to create more volume, use a diffuser overhead. Most of them can be used to massage the scalp and add height.

5

Fine tune the ends with a round brush.

The key to effortless waves is the end of the hair. Therefore, Atkin recommends replacing the diffuser attachment of the concentrator nozzle to smooth the ends. Use a comb or round brush to give the ends extra attention.

6

Apply a coat of oil for shine and crimp control.

As a final step, apply an oil or serum to make your hair glow, but avoid the roots so you don't ruin all of the above. "Most products start at the back to make sure you don't get limping and greasy wrinkles on your face," Atkin says. "If you're doing a curly look, or if you're doing a messy style, then you can just rake it with your palm."
